O children, do you hear what sort of man your father is to you?

ὄλοιτο μὲν μή: δεσπότης γάρ ἐστ᾽ ἐμός:
may he perish!—but no, he is my master.

ἀτὰρ κακός γ᾽ ὢν ἐς φίλους ἁλίσκεται.
Yet he is indeed caught out being wicked towards his friends/loved ones.

τίς δ᾽ οὐχὶ θνητῶν; ἄρτι γιγνώσκεις τόδε,
what mortal is not caught out? Are you just learning this,

ὡς πᾶς τις αὑτὸν τοῦ πέλας μᾶλλον φιλεῖ,
that every single man loves himself more than his neighbour,

εἰ τούσδε γ᾽ εὐνῆς οὕνεκ᾽ οὐ στέργει πατήρ;
since in fact their father does not show affection for these boys for the sake of sex?

ἴτ᾽, εὖ γὰρ ἔσται, δωμάτων ἔσω, τέκνα.
Go inside the house,for it will be fine children.

σὺ δ᾽ ὡς μάλιστα τούσδ᾽ ἐρημώσας ἔχε καὶ μὴ πέλαζε μητρὶ δυσθυμουμένῃ.
And you, keep them as far off as you can and do not bring them near their mother while she is angry.

ἤδη γὰρ εἶδον ὄμμα νιν ταυρουμένην τοῖσδ᾽, ὥς τι δρασείουσαν:
For already I saw her turning into a bull with her eyes at them, as though she has a mind to do something.

οὐδὲ παύσεται χόλου, σάφ᾽ οἶδα, πρὶν κατασκῆψαί τινι.
Nor will she cease her wrath, I am sure, before she attacks someone.

eXρούς γε μέντοι, μὴ φίλους, δράσειέ τι.
Indeed may she do anything to her enemies, not her friends/loved ones!
