Do you hear the cry, the children's cry? O wretched and accursed woman!

οἴμοι, τί δράσω; ποῖ φύγω μητρὸς χέρας;
Oh, what shall I do? How can I escape my mother's hands?

οὐκ οἶδ᾽, ἄδελφε φίλτατ᾽: ὀλλύμεσθα γάρ.
I know not, dear brother. We are done for.

Shall I enter the house? I am determined to stop the death of the children.

Yes, in heaven's name, stop it! Now is the time.

We are now close to the snare of the sword.

τάλαιν᾽, ὡς ἄρ᾽ ἦσθα πέτρος ἢ σίδαρος, ἅτις τέκνων ὃν ἔτεκες ἄροτον αὐτόχειρι μοίρᾳ κτενεῖς.
Hard-hearted wretch, you are, it seems, a stone or a piece of iron. You mean to kill the children you gave birth to with a fate your own hand deals out.

μίαν δὴ κλύω μίαν τῶν πάρος γυναῖκ᾽ ἐν φίλοις χέρα βαλεῖν τέκνοις, Ἰνὼ μανεῖσαν ἐκ θεῶν, ὅθ᾽ ἡ Διὸς δάμαρ νιν ἐξέπεμψε δωμάτων ἄλn:
One woman, only one, of all that have been, have I heard of who put her hand to her own children: Ino driven mad by the gods when Hera sent her forth to wander in madness from the house.

πίτνει δ᾽ ἁ τάλαιν᾽ ἐς ἅλμαν φόνῳ τέκνων δυσσεβεῖ, ἀκτῆς ὑπερτείνασα ποντίας πόδα, δυοῖν τε παίδοιν συνθανοῦσ᾽ ἀπόλλυται.
The unhappy woman fell into the sea, impiously murdering her children. Stepping over the sea's edge, she perished with her two children.

τί δῆτ᾽ οὐ γένοιτ᾽ ἂν ἔτι δεινόν; ὦ γυναικῶν λέχος πολύπονον, ὅσα βροτοῖς ἔρεξας ἤδη κακά.
What possible further horror now remains? O womankind and marriage fraught with pain, how many are the troubles you have already wrought for mortal men!
