The Saffir - Simpson Scale
Is a 1-5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. Estimates poetntial property damage. Category 3 and higher are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage.
1 of 10
The Saffir - Simpson Scale limitations
-doesn't take into account the nature of the country -is the country well/ not well protected - limits the hurricane's scale, there is no upper level -storms getting worse with climate change
2 of 10
National Hurricane Centre (NHC)
Hurricane watch and hurricane warning
3 of 10
Hurricane watch
announcements made tospecific coastal areas that hurricane conditions are possible in the next 36 hours
4 of 10
Hurricane warning
announcements are made to specific coastal areas that have sustained wind speed of 119km/h and above expected in the next 24 hours
5 of 10
Monitoring technology
geostationary satellite, polar orbiting satellite, visible light meter, infrared meter
6 of 10
Geostationary satellite
-orbits 35,780km -completes one orbit in 24 hours -orbiting over the equator will appear to be stationary and 'hang over' the spot on the earths surfact all the time
7 of 10
Polar orbiting satellite
-pass over earth from pole to pole -proves detailed information about cloud structure -orbits lower that geostationary satellite
8 of 10
Visible light meter
-provides visible images -what is viewed is sunlight reflected fron earth or clouds -images visible during daylight -the brighter the cloud appears the thicker it is
9 of 10
Infrared meter
-cold surfaces white, warm surfaces darker -measures temperature of cloud+earths surface -infrared images available even when no daylight
