Materials Definitions

?
Laminar flow
Occurs when adjacent layers of fluid do not cross into each other
1 of 14
Turbulent flow
Occurs when layers of fluid cross into each other, resulting in the formation of eddy currents or vortices
2 of 14
Viscosity
Relates to a fluid's stickiness and therefore its resistance to flow
3 of 14
Elastic material
A material that will return to its original dimensions when the force is removed
4 of 14
Plastic material
A material that will not return to its original dimensions when the force is removed
5 of 14
Ductile material
A material that can undergo significant plastic deformation before breaking, therefore can be drawn into wires
6 of 14
Malleable material
A material that can be dented or hammered into shape
7 of 14
Brittle material
A material that undergoes little or no plastic deformation before breaking
8 of 14
Hard material
A material that does not scratch easily
9 of 14
Stiff material
A material that requires a large tensile force for a small deformation
10 of 14
Elastic limit
Point beyond further deformation will be plastic
11 of 14
Limit of proportionality
Point on a force-extension graph where the relationship ceases to be linear
12 of 14
Order of labels on a force extension graph
Limit of proportionality; Elastic limit; Yield point; Breaking force; Wire breaks
13 of 14
Stoke's law only applies when...
The object is a small, slow moving sphere in laminar flow
