Breaking stress
Maximum tensile stress that produces a fracture
1 of 11
Elastic limit
This is the maximum force a body can endure and still regain its original shape and size when the force applied is removed
2 of 11
Hooke's Law
The extension of a stretched spring or wire is proportional to the force applied provided that it does not exceed the limit of proportionality
3 of 11
Ductility
This is a property of a material whereby it can be permanently stretched
4 of 11
Elasticity
A Material regains its original shape and size when the deforming force is removed
5 of 11
Brittleness
Material cannot be permanently stretched. They break one elastic limit is exceeded
6 of 11
Stiffness
The stiffness of a body is a measure of its resistance to changes in size and or shape
7 of 11
Stress
Is the forced applied divided by the cross sectional area it operates over. It is the force per unit area of cross section. Pa
8 of 11
Yield Point
A large extension is produced for a small increase in force. Materials showing this is said to have plastic behaviour
9 of 11
Strength
Is the maximum force applied to a body before it breaks
10 of 11
Strain
It is the ratio of the change in length to the original length. It can also be considered as the extension per unit length. No dimesions
