The idea that the media has a power over the audience, and it can control and persuade people as it directly injects information and it determines our behaviour.This is a immediate effect and shows that the media can control us.

The media does not use us; we use the media. We use the media to satisfy our needs and seek gratification, we watch certain programs to do this.

We use the media to support our views we already have, this can depend on many factors such as: gender,ethnicity,age and social class.

providing psychological relief through the open expression of strong emotions; causing catharsis. "crying is a cathartic release"

the false worry about people and deviance/crime in society fuelled by the media

What is the Deviance Amplification Model?
Where a small story is exaggerated and distorted by the media, it can lead to certain groups being called Folk Devils and be stereotyped and also a moral panic can occur all because the media sensationalise the story, this can make the story bigger.

What does the word sensationalise mean?
the presentation of stories in a way that is intended to provoke public interest or excitement, at the expense of accuracy.

who you are as a person; this can be influenced by what we see in the media as, nowadays, people use the media to confirm and explore their identities. The media shapes our views on what we should be consuming and what we should be like.

Society is based on conflicting interests between different groups, Owners of the media are part of a minority who use their power to influence opinions in their own best interests, - Press owners have intervened directly to control content,

What is Agenda setting ?
the media can focus attention on some issues and ignore others. They don’t tell us what to think but what to think about. This can affect political views and voting habits. Those who decide what makes the news are gatekeepers they have the power
