Media products such as newspapers, magazines and radio that tell us something about the society that we live in.

What is semiotics?
Analysis looking at the meaning of language/images etc - looking at the small aspects of media sources.

What is thematic analysis?
Looking at what's going on and why, looking at the themes/messages conveyed in the media.

What is formal analysis?
Quantitative analysis that counts the number of times that something happens.

What is an example of this?
The Bristol Fawcett society looked at the representations of women in the media and found in a day's output from CBeebies only 30% of the main characters were females.

What is another study that used mass media?
Longmore and Cumberbatch and Negrine also used content analysis of mass media to investigate media representations of the disabled and how that altered over time.

What are advantages of this method?
It is cheap - all sociologists need to do is buy newspapers, magazines or watch TV programmes. It can be longitudinal - can compare media reports and content over a period of time and can be reliable as other sociologists can repeat and cross-check.

What are disadvantages of this method?
Can be subjective e.g., semiotics depends on the interpretation of the researcher. Can be time consuming as media products may need to be checked over a fairly long period of time and the researcher has to assume the products have an effect on their ...
