What is the humanist perspective?
Each individual person has different experiences in life to the other, people are not able to be catergorised. Each person is an expert on themselves and only themselves.

Maslow's theory
Maslow's theory accepts that many people will fail to self-actualise and live happy and fullfilled lives because they have no met their basic needs.

Basic/deficit needs
Maslow identified four deficit needs. (physiological, safety, belonging, self-esteem).

Self-actualisation pt.1
Deficit needs must be met until a person can fully reach self-actualisation. Maslow believed that deficit needs limit and distort peoples development. the majority of individuals never achieve self-actualisation.

Self-actualisation pt.2
If a person is not worried about physical needs, safety, belonging, self-esteem they are 'free' to go beond normal pressure of life and reach self-actualisation.

Self-actualisation pt.3
Maslow stated that very few individuals reach self-actualisation during adolesence and early maturity. physical safety and belonging are key issues to infanct and early child hood. self-esteem needs are important to teenagers anf young adults.

Seven stages
Maslows theory can be explained as having seven stages to it (physiological, safety, belonging, self-esteem, cognitive, aesthetic (beauty) and self-actualisation.

Qualites when reaching self-actualisation
A more accurate perception on reality, greater acceptance of self and others, greater self-knowledge, greater invlovement within projects throughout life, greater independance, creativity, spiritual and artistic abilites.
