Elizabeth never named a successor, therefore no 10 is partly incorrect

He was never forced to give up his claim though, even though his mother had been barred from the succession, so it was safe to assume that Elizabeth did intend for him to be ruler.

No I know that! He thought if he rejected Mary he was in with a chance for the English throne as Mary was such a threat because everyone (lords and public) wanted Elizabeth to name her as her successor.
