W/C sell their labour to the ruling class in return for a wage, relationship is unequal and based off conflict as ruling class want maximum labour for the lowest costs. R/C exploit the W/C.

been taught that capitalism provides them with a good standard of living. believes society is meritocratic (based on ability and effort), w/c in a state of false consciousness, aren't aware of whats happening.

marxist see nuclear family as serving interests of the ruling class, family discourages the w/c to critique capitalism, so they think the family helps wider society.

Criticisms of marxists analysis of the family
doesn't consider how individuals experience family life or how family links to social institutions eg schools. seen as neglecting the real emotion and satisfaction that people get from being part of a family, some can resist authority at work.
