when were coalition policies introduced
2010-onwards, they got rid of LEAS now funding goes straight to school
8 of 30
one policy they introduced
academys, these schools are still funded by the state but the money goes directly to the headteacher(not through LEAS) and they decide exactly what the spend it on and how much. New labout tried to introduce but coaltion managed too
9 of 30
the other policy
free schools- these are still funded by the state and can be set up by anyone(parents, faith leader or businesses) and also create their own curriculum. parents may do this so they can dictate how their child learns.
10 of 30
example of a free school
a muslim school in smallheath was set up, this keeps a strong community within the school and most schools are christian .
11 of 30
problems with free schools
more exclusion, MC parents more likely to open these as they are educated and can supply resources as these schools only benefit the MC as MC parents open and hav ethe freedom to choose who attends and WC less likely to be chosen.
12 of 30
(marketisation policies): what was admission policies, open enrolement and selection
parents now fill in a form of top 3 school choices (not due to catchment area anymore) schools then select the children they want due to siblings, special talents. This encouraged covert selection(illegal)
13 of 30
what is covert selection
the school discourages WC parents from applying by making the website hard for them to understand so no WC parents will apply
14 of 30
what was parentocracy
David (1993) this means parents rule where their children go to school. schools dont select from 11+ anymore parents now select(open enrolement). every school now trying to be chosen, encourages diversity, WC+MC applying for same schools.
15 of 30
Ball- myth of parentocracy
they make it seem like the parents choose but WC and MC wont choose the same schools as WC are less informed and have less access to the schools data.
16 of 30
what is funding formula
schools are allocated a set fund for each student they attract: each child is a 'golden ticket' for the school. more students=more funding recieved meaning more resources can be bought to attract to more parents
17 of 30
what is the national curriculum
this reuqired all schools teach the same subjects from 7-16. schools being taught and assessed on same things (GCSE's) means parents have a more informed decision for which school as they can compare grades
18 of 30
what are league tables
they rank schools performance characteristics(GCSE's) and are open to the public so that parents can see them and choose their schools.
19 of 30
what is cream skimming
the schools pick the best of the best, the over subscribed ones can be more selective
20 of 30
what is silk shifting
the schools avoid taking the WC pupils, this ruins equality as MC will be more successful at the best schools and will go higher and higher in the league tables giving the bottom schools no chance at catching up
21 of 30
what is ofsted
a government organisation to access schools. Aim was to drive up standards and make schools improve, the external people will make the schools improve and panic. Only good reports will attract parents not negative ones.
22 of 30

1944 education act, under the butler act
23 of 30
what were the 3 schools introduced (best to worst)
Grammar, secondary modern, techincal. they were based on a meritocracy (more effort put in more you get out)wh
24 of 30
what % got into each school based of 11+ test
grammar- top 15-20%, only ones who passed, secondary modern-75%, techincal bottom 5% this school prepared for pratical jobs so mostly WC
25 of 30
when was new vocationalism introduced and under what gov
1979- when Thatcher first came into power but gov before made this policy, Labour, they said the comp system wasnt preparing for work well enough so made this
26 of 30
what other gov supported
conservatives as it boomed the economy and pushed people into jobs (capitalist so want people in jobs)
27 of 30
what was an NVQ
(1986) a work based qualification which recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a particular job. scrapped in 2015.
28 of 30
BTEC
(1984) Business and technology education council- they are specalist work-related qualifications. They combine practical learning with subject and theory content, still going and becoming more and more popular.
29 of 30

all very specific, not much flexibility. Education trying to work with an achieved status but this doesnt, it just pushed you into a job.
