The removal of one or more layers of hierarchy from the organisational structure.

Tall structures
Narrow span of control, enables managers to keep close control over the activities of their subordinates.

Flat structures
Wide span of control, junior employees have greater degree of Independence.

Teams of employees with appropriate skills are assembled to carry out particular tasks. All employees are on the same skill level.

Is a special form of power in the sense that it gives people the right to give commands which others accept as legitimate.

Empowerment
Is the process of allowing subordinates to have a greater control over their working lives by, for example letting them make many of their own decisions.

Delegation
Is the passing down of authority to junior employees for a particular tasks. This is often limited to specific tasks and activities.

Is the process of designing jobs containing tasks of varying complexity that allows employees to use their abilities to a greater extent.

Extends the range of duties associated with a particular job.
