In what areas is flooding being managed?
Bangladesh, Oxford.
1 of 14
Where is Bangladesh? What rivers flow here?
South Asia, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna.
2 of 14
Hard engineering responses?
Flood action plan/ Dhaka embankment (8000km of levees) built to increase channel capacity.
3 of 14
Advantages of Dhaka embankment?
Embankment set back from the river (protection from erosive power), contain sluices that can be opened to reduce river flow, area between embankment and river can be used to grow crops.
4 of 14
Economic disadvantages of Dhaka embankment?
Will cost $10 billion, take 100 years to build,
5 of 14
Environmental disadvantages of Dhaka embankment?
Increase of deposition in river (causing chars), compartmentalisation reduces flushing of agrochemicals, cause wetlands dry-out (biodiversity).
6 of 14
Social disadvantages of Dhaka embankment?
Don't allow water to re-enter river (hampering aid), sudden breaches causes infertile sand, decreased back-flow of river (causing stagnant water and diseise), decreased flooding may reduce number of fish.
7 of 14
Soft engineering responses?
Community projects (raised housing, agricultural projects, education), 2004 flood action plan reducing de-forestation.
8 of 14
Where is Oxford? What river flows here?
Central England, Thames.
9 of 14
Hard engineering responses?
Flood relief scheme (channel dredging, flood relief channels, straightening - this reduces peak flow), proposed 8km long 25m wide flood relief channel between Binsley and Sandford Lock.
10 of 14
Economic impacts of hard engineering in Oxford.
Flood releif channels would cost around £100 million,
11 of 14
Environmental impacts of hard engineering in Oxford.
Flood releif channels would cut through Iffley and Oxford Meadows which are SAC's and SSSI's.
12 of 14
Soft engineering responses?
Land use zoning (building of least important infrastructure such as Cherwell valley agriculture on liable land), proposed 4 water storage areas (large areas of farmland allowed to flood).
13 of 14
Economic impacts of soft engineering in Oxford.
Land use zoning would have an economic impact on infrastructure, water storage areas could impact agriculture and was considered too expensive by the Environmental agency.
