MANAGING CLIMATE CHANGE

?
What is mitigation?
- Reducing the causes of climate change.
1 of 9
Mitigation - planting trees
- Increases amount CO2 that is absorbed from atmosphere through photosynthesis.
2 of 9
Mitigation - carbon capture
- Carbon Capture and storage (CCS) is a new technology designed to reduce climate change by reducing emissions from fossil fuel burning stations.-Involves capturing CO2 and transporting it to places where it can be stored safely, e.g deep underground
3 of 9
Mitigation - alternative energy production
- Replacing fossil fuels with nuclear power and renewable energy can help reduce climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. - UK: More offshore windfarms being built, several wave+tidal power projects+nuclear power plants are being planned.
4 of 9
Mitigation - international agreements
- 1997: most countries agreed to monitor+cut greenhouse gas emissions by signing international agreement ('Kyoto Protocol'). - Each country was set a target. - UK reduced emissions by 22% by 2012.
5 of 9
What is adaptation?
- Responding to changes caused by climate change
6 of 9
Adaptation - changing agricultural systems
-Changing rainfall+temp.s affects productivity of existing systems.-Plant new crop types that are more suitable to new climate, e.g. grapes may be grown in Southern England.-Biotechnology: create new crop types more resistant to extreme weather event
7 of 9
Adaptation - managing water supply
- Dry areas are predicted to get drier, leading to more water shortages - need to use water more efficiently. - Install water meters in homes to discourage people from using a lot of water. - Collect rain water and recycle waste water.
8 of 9
Adaptation - coping with rising sea levels
- Build physical defences (e.g. flood barriers) and have better flood warning systems, e.g. Thames Barrier in London can be closed to prevent sea water flooding city. - In poorer areas, e.g. Bangladesh, build houses on top of earth embankments.
