Background
It has 1190 islands, 199 of which are inhabited by Maldivians, it will be fully submerged within 50-100 years and will be one of the first places to be lost due to sea level rise.

Causes (of sea level rise and Maldives vulnerability)
Thermal expansion of water, melting of ice caps (Greenland Glaciers), the Maldives are low lying (80% below sea level).

Natural effects
Destroyed habitats, loss of topsoil (soil is only 20cm and can easily be washed away.) loss of beraches.

Economic effects
Loss of tourism which is a main industry, loss of jobs and the airport will be in danger.

Social effects
Forced migration, houses lost, lack of fresh water due to the contamination of the water supply by sea water.

Political effects
Had to ask for aid (Japan gave $60 million in aid for sea defenses) only remaining option is to buy land to migrate people to and combat global warming.
