What type of pathogen causes malaria?
Malaria is caused by a protozoan. These are single celled organisms that cause cell damage and produces toxins.

Something that a parasite feeds off. They get infected when they are bitten or feed on an infected animal.

How is malaria spread?
Mosquitoes feed on an infected animal and they become the vector as they carry the disease without becoming ill with malaria. The Mosquitoe will then go and bite its victims who are usually humans or animals. This will repeat over and over again.

Diarrhoea, Cough/Cold, High temperature, Muscle pains, Sweats and chills

How is malaria treated?
Treatment for malaria depends on where the person is infected with the disease. Different areas of the world depends on different malaria being resistant to particular medicines.

In which countries is malaria a particular problem?
Malaria occurs in large areas of Central and South America, Sub-saharan Africa, India, South-East Asia, the Middle East, Oceania and some parts of Europe.

Why is malaria more common in these countries?
Malaria is common because the living conditions are poor and there are low medical supplies for vaccination.

How can holidaymakers protect themselves against malaria?
Holidaymakers can take medication, wear insect repellent spray, wear suitable clothing and sleep under a mosquito net.

How can locals protect themselves against malaria?
They could also use the same things as the holiddaymakers but they have more immunity from it as they have been living there for a longer time.
