A group of employees who join together to maintain and improve their conditions of employment. 1) Negotiation-finding a solution for management+trade union differences. 2) Representation- represent individual union members when they have problems.

Provide a valuable communication link between management+workforce. May ease situations that could cause difficulty for a firm (can be consulted in the early stages of decision-making).

What is the difference between industrial disputes and industrial action
Disputes= disagreements between management+trade union. If serious enough action will occur i.e. a strike, work-to-rule, go-slow, overtime bans. BUT, employers can also take action against workers, i.e. withdrawing overtime, lockout, dismissing them.

What effects of industrial action may occur for the employees
Reduced salary/lose of earnings, closure of the business+redundancies, stress+friction between hierarchies, workers are in a weaker position if unsuccessful, and public support may decline.

Damaged reputation, lost production leading to reduced rev+profits, continuing poor relationships with employees leads to poor motivation+communication.

Define work councils and what there job is
A committee of management and workforce representatives that meet to discuss company wide issues. They contemplate the role of trade unions and review a company's plans.

Recognising the other side's objectives+needs, appropriate leadership+culture, structural issues including intermediaries (individuals/groups within official communication channels that are passed to reach the intended receiver)+hierarchies.

Worker participation will increase, makes it easier to implement change, encourages staff motivation, improves competitiveness, decision making with different perspectives can improve relations.
