How are the major groups catagroised (what does it depend on?)
Their nutrional sources of carbon, energy and electrons and how these are extracted
1 of 9
What does autotroph mean in the name ?
The carbon source is inorganic so from CO2 and therefore the organisms fix their own carbon (make thier own food)
2 of 9
What is the energy source of a Photolithoautotroph? (and why)
Energy is from light
3 of 9
What is an example of a photolithoautotroph? and how do they generate ATP?
Cyanobacteria which undergo photosynthesis to genrate ATP (energy source)
4 of 9
Which major group and organism example uses organic carbon (already fixed), organic electron sources such as hydrogen and light as its energy source?
Photoorganoheterotrophs, such as purple non-sulfur bacteria
5 of 9
What are Chemotrophs? and what reactions are normally used?
Microorganisms that gain energy/nutrients NOT from sunlight but chemical sources mainly via oxidative reactions
6 of 9
What is an example of a Chemolithoautotroph and what are their electron and carbon sources?
Nitrosomonas bacteria as their carbon source is inorganic from CO2, energy and electron source is inorganic such as the use of ammonia NH3.
7 of 9
Which catagory includes bacteria, protazoa and fungi? What do these microorganisms do to get their nutrients?
Chemoorganoheterotrophs - Complex organic material is used where organic m ater made by autotrophs or autotrophs themselves e.g dead vegetable matter is broken down (decomposed)
8 of 9
What other term describes microorganisms of the chemoorganoheterotroph group? and what does it mean?
They are saprophytic, meaning enzymes are secreted to digest extracellualr matter in order to recieve their nutrients.
