Participants
Experimental: 16 male london taxi drivers, rght handed, passed the knowledge, mean age 44 Control: 16 male NTD
1 of 11
Function of Hippocampus
Spacial memory and navagation - remembering locations and how to get to them
2 of 11
Aim
To investiage if the brain of TD would have different morphology to NTD and further investigate the function of the hippocampus
3 of 11
How was the data collected?
MRI scans
4 of 11
2 techniques used to analyse data?
VBM (Voxel based morphometry) and Pixel Counting
5 of 11
What is VBM?
Voxel based morphometry - comparing every brain to a template brain to see overall differences particularly grey matter density - the template brain was made from 50 healthy males MRI scans
6 of 11
What was the template brain made from?
50 healthy males MRI scans
7 of 11
What is pixel counting?
A researcher blind to the experiment counted the total pixels on an MRI image of a slice of the hippo campus (A - 6, B - 12, P - 6) a correction was made accoring to inter-cranial volume to account for people w/ larger skulls
8 of 11
Results of VBM analysis
The only regions with increased grey matter in the TD was the R and L hippocampi - posterior, the controls had more grey matter in the anterior
9 of 11
Results of pixel counting
The control group had larger antrior right hippocampus and had a larger R body than the left, Taxi drivers - larger posterior than controls
10 of 11
Correlations
Time spent as a taxi driver postivley correlated with the volume of right posterior hippocampus, time spent as a TD negativly crrelated with volume of anterior hippocampi
