What was the aim of Maguire's study?
Maguire wanted to find out whether those who rely on spational navigational skills have structural changes in their brain. The study aimed to dfetermine whether taxi drivers have a large posterior hippocampus.
1 of 8
Describe the particpants within the experimental group in the study?
The particpants were 16 right handed male London taxi drivers. Their age ranged from 32-62 years and there was a mean age of 44. All of the particpants had passed 'The knowledge'.
2 of 8
Describe the Control group within the experiment?
The group Control group consisted of 50 right handed males who all matched the same criteria of the Experimental group (except they were not taxi drivers)
3 of 8
Describe the Methodology of the experiment?
Quasi Experiment. IV: Amount of navigational skills used in day to day life. DV: Structure and volume of grey matter within the hippocampus.
4 of 8
What was done with the 50 MRI scans obtained from the database?
It was used to create the 'average hippocampi'.
5 of 8
Describe Image Analysis One.
The researchers were interested in the Size and Shape of parts of the brain - partic the hippocampus - they used Voxel Based Morphology to do this. This was used to measure the Density of the Grey matter. VBM provides a 3 dimensional measurement of

Describe Image Analysis Two
Pixel Counting on the scans of the Taxi drivers and the Controls. 2D. This was done by taking 26 slices of the images of the hippocampus. The researchers used a double blind control.
7 of 8
Describe the Results of the experiment
VBM showed an increase in Grey matter volume in the Right Posterior Hippocampus, whereas the Control group had greater volume in the Anterior hippocampus. Correlation: The longer the P's had been taxi drivers the larger the posterior hippocampus.
