April 1793- to protect France from 'internal threats'

When was the Revolutionary Tribunal established?
March 1793- tasked with trying suspects accused of counter-revolutionary activity. 1,251 people were murdered under the Revolutionary Tribunal.

When were the first representatives-on-mission sent out?
March 1793- initially to ensure conscription in the provinces was being met. Some focused on rooting out disloyal local officials (most reps were Jacobins). The rep Carrier authorised the slaughter of 2,000 in the Loire after the Vendee Revolt.

March 1793- one for each commune- they had to monitor all suspicious individuals in their areas, as well as foreigners.

Outlawed rebels- they could be put to death within 24 hours. 10,000-12,000 people put to death through this law.

In response to demands from the sans-culottes: punished opposition to the revolution. 300,000 were arrested under this law.

Aimed to increase central control of France- made it legal for the CPS to purge local government officials.
