Macbeth

?
"Is this a dagger which i see before me?"
This shows that Macbeth might be imagining this or he may be having a vision. Macbeth is thinking out loud which could show it might be metaphorical. The whiches could have sent this which would link to the supernatural, the audience thinks its real?

"Our fears in Banquo stick deep"
Macbeth is very concerned about Banquo in act 3 because of his "royalty of nature" this shows he is good and noble. Banquo is the ancestor of James I so Shakespeare flatters the king by describing his ancestor and great and heroic.

"Were the grac'd person of our Banquo present"
this is dramatic irony- When the audience knows something the characters dont. The audience knows Banquo is dead. Banquo's qhost is also on stage whichthe audience has seen but nobody on stage has.

"How now you secret black and midnight hags"
3 adjectives, triadic structure (rule of three). Lots of threes in the play e.g. three witches. An inversion of the Sacred number three- the Holy Trinity. Lots of references to night and day, light and darkness in the play.

"Double double toil and trouble"
Not to be trusted- ‘double’ could mean double dealing or untrustworthy. They speak in trochaic meter- rhythm makes it sound like a spell. Just like in act 1 the witches speak in riddles- they are not to be trusted.
5 of 10
"Had I three ears I’s hear thee"
Doesn’t seem scared of the witches- not taking them seriously- over-confident? Arrogant? Seems odd to have humour at such a serious moment. Maybe he just means he’s really going to listen!
6 of 10
Lady M: “Are you a man?"
She questions his masculinity- she’s in control- she is cool and rational like a man is supposed to be.
7 of 10
Macbeth: “be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck"
Chuck= term of address (name)= affectionate. Shows he cares about her. But also, he hides his plans from her- change in their relationship- not in it together anymore. Could be he is protecting her, or maybe he doesn’t trust anyone now.

Macbeth: “O full of scorpions is my mind"
Important quote- nice to analyse- WLA- scorpions- evil, harm you, imagery of them crawling in his head is quite creepy- suggest how he’s feeling- his thoughts are dangerous and irritating- he is troubled!
9 of 10
"I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal"
She means: I will smear the servants’ faces with blood. Gilding is the golden paint you see on statues and picture frames. Ironic- like a dark joke- gilding is something expensive and makes things look good.
