195 students from Washington Uni. 45 in experiment 1, 150 in experiment 2.

Procedure 1
-45 students show 7 clips of car accidents (5-30secs) - Split into 5 groups of 9. -Asked to write an account of accidents & answer questions.

Procedure 1 continued
-Critical question was "How fast were the cars going when they ***** each other" - Verbs were "smashed, collided, bumped, hit, contacted" - Researchers analysed responses.

IV= verb in critical question. DV= speed estimate given

Results
Mean estimates:- Smashed=40.8 ; Collided= 39.3 ; Bumped=38.1 ; Hit=34.0 ; Contacted=31.8

Conclusion
Speed estimates occurred because the critical word biased a person's response. It also alters a persons memory.
