Metaphor
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

simile
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).

Juxtaposition
a literary device wherein the author places a person, concept, place, idea or theme parallel to another.

Denotation
Denotation refers to the use of the dictionary definition or literal meaning of a word.

Connotation
Connotations are the associations people make with words that go beyond the literal or dictionary definition.

Assonance
refers to repetition of sounds produced by vowels within a sentence or phrase. In this regard assonance can be understood to be a kind of alliteration.

Semantic field
hen a text (anything with words, whether it be spoken or written) has a topic or subject that a group of words relate to.

Sibiliance
a more specific type of alliteration that relies on the repetition of soft consonant sounds in words to create a wooshing or hissing sound in the writing.

Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Hyperbole
a literary device wherein the author uses specific words and phrases that exaggerate and overemphasize the basic crux of the statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect.

Oxymoron
a significant literary device as it allows the author to use contradictory, contrasting concepts placed together in a manner that actually ends up making sense in a strange, and slightly complex manner. (eg cold fire)

Onomatopoeia
refers to sound words whose pronunciation to the actual sound they represent.
