Lipids

?
What are the three types of lipids?
Triglycerides, Phopholipids and Cholesterol.
1 of 8
What is the structure of Triglycerides?
They are made up of one glycerol and three fatty acids joined by the condensation reaction forming ester bonds on the carboxylic acid group.
2 of 8
What is the difference between an saturated and unsaturated fatty acid (triglyceride)?
A saturated fatty acid only contains Carbon to Carbon single bonds and contains the maximum amount of hydrogens, solid at room temp. Unsaturated fatty acid contains double Carbon to Carbon bonds and contains less hydrogen ions, liquid at room temp.
3 of 8
What is the structure of Phospholipids?
They are made up of two fatty acids and a phosphate group. The phospholipid head is hydrophilic and the fatty acid tails are hydrophobic, forming a phospholipid biolayer.
4 of 8
Emulsion test for lipids.
Crush sample if solid. Add ethanol and shake until dissolves. Add water drop by drop and shake again. Positive result: Cloudy/white emulsion.
