How do we get limestone from the ground ?
Quarrying is the method used to get limestone out of the ground
2 of 28
What is limestone used for?
Limestone is used for making blocks out of for building with.
3 of 28
What is teh disadvantage of using limestone for buildings?
reactive.
4 of 28
When Calcium carbonate thermally decomposes it makes...
Calcium oxide and carbon dioxide are made when calcium carbonate thermally decomposes.
5 of 28
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is when one substance chemically changes into at least two new substances when its heated. Magnesium, Copper, Zinc and Sodium Carbonates decompose in the same way.
6 of 28
What else does Calcium Carbonate react with?
Also reacts with acid to make a calcium salt. carbon dioxide and water.
7 of 28
What does this mean?
Means that limestone is damaged by acid rain.
8 of 28
What does Calcium oxide react with and what doe sthe reaction produce?
reacts with water to produce hydroxide.
9 of 28
What is calcium hydroxide?
It's an alkali .
10 of 28
What can calcium hydroxide be used for?
can be used to neutralise acidic soil in fields. Powdered limestone can be used for this too but calcium hydroxide is faster.
11 of 28
Calcium hydroxide can also be used in a test for...
Carbon dioxide. If you make a solution of calcium hydroxide in water (lime water) and bubble gas through it, the solution will turn cloudy is there's carbon dioxide in the gas. The cloudiness is formed by the formation of calcium carbonate.

What other 3 things is limestone used to make?
Cement, Mortar, concrete
13 of 28
How is cement made?
Powdered limestone is heated in a kiln with powdered clay to make cement
14 of 28
How is mortar made?
Cement can be mixed with sans and water to make mortar.
15 of 28
How in concrete made?
You can mix cement with sand and aggregate (water and gravel) to make concrete.

What is the disadvantage of quarrying limestone?
1. Makes huge holes in the group- permanently changes the landscape.
17 of 28
What is another disadvantage?
2. Quarrying processes like blasting rocks apart with explosives, makes lots of noise and dust in quiet, scenic areas
18 of 28
What is another disadvantage?
3. The limestone needs to be transported away from the quarry
19 of 28
What is another disadvantage?
4. Waste materials are produced which aren't nice to look at.
20 of 28
Making stuff from limestone causes...
pollution.
21 of 28
Disadvantage of making cement?
Cement factories make a lot of dust which can cause breathing problems for people. Also, energy is needed to produce cement and quicklime. The energy is likely to come from burning fossil fuels, which causes pollution.
22 of 28
What are the advantages of limestone?
provides houses and roads.
23 of 28
Advantage of limestone...
The chemicals used in making paints, dyes and medicines also come from limestone.
24 of 28
Advantage of limestone...
Limestone products are used to neutralise acidic soil. Acidity in lakes and rivers caused by acid rain is also neutralised by limestone products.
25 of 28
Advantage of limestone...
Limestone is also used in powerestation chimneys to neutralise sulfur dioxide, which is a cause of acid rain
26 of 28
Advantage of limestone...
The quarry and associated businesses provide jobs for epopel and bring more money into the economy. This can lead to improvements i transport, roads, recreation facilities and health
27 of 28
Advantage of limestone...
Once quarrying is complete, landscaping and restoration of the area is normally required as part of the planning permission
