The soul is more important than the body and is not subject to change. The soul enables us to have knowledge.

The body and it's senses cannot be a reliable guide to the truth. It allows us to gain opinions via our senses. However, it is constantly distracting us from our point in life which is philosophical thought.

Unlike the physical matter of the body, the soul cannot be split into parts, nor can it change.

The reason, the spirit, and appetite (desire). Sometimes these things pull apart from one another, desire often leads us to things which are not helpful. We need our spirit to make us determined to do the right thing.

Plato's Dualism - Eternal Soul
Given that the soul cannot change, Plato argues that it cannot come into or pass out of existence. It existed prior to its incarnation into the human body and will exist after death.

The soul had knowledge of the forms before being pulled to earth by appetite as it was previously part of that world.

Plato's Dualism - incarnation
When the soul is incarnated into the body, it experiences all of the tension between the soul and the body. Plato views the body as a prison from which the soul is liberated from at death.
