Name and Locate
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a Transboundary water issue on the border of Lesotho and South Africa (Free State). In the South of Africa and Lesotho is within it. It is a mountainous area with much relief rain.

Describe the issue
Has much relief rain ( over 1000mm annual rainfall ) because air is moist from Indian Ocean. Some parts receive 1200mm whereas Free State has on average less than 668mm due to rain shadow and is very seasonal.

How it is managed
Large scale project to construct six major dams in Lesotho. 4200km of tunnel system to transfer water to area with low supply and in the neighbouring country. It diverts 40% of the water in the Senqu river basin (Lesotho) to Vaal river (Free state).

Wate is then carried to Gutting province which is industrial and highly populated.

Income received from selling water through the LHWP is providing 75% of the country's income. This helps to develop its own water management since 76% have access to safe water and only 37% sanitation)

The dam will provide hydroelectric power for Lesotho. Job opportunities have been created at the damn but about 20,000 people have moved into informal settlements.
