General principles judges may apply when they read a statute.

Recognition by Associated Words. 'Known by company it keeps'. Word derives meaning from surrounding words.

(of the Same Kind or Nature). 1. Are there general words following a list of specific words? If so, what type of specific words? Interpretation: any new item will be included in statute only if it is of same type as specific words.

(Expressing One Thing Excludes Another). Mention of one or more specific things may be taken to exclude others of same type.
