120 Chinese children, 108 Canadian children

Chinese participants:
40x7yr olds, 40x9yr olds, 40x11yr olds, equal gender split, divided equally between physical and social story setting.

Canadian Participants:
36x7yr olds, 40x9yr olds, 32x11yr olds, 58boys 50girls. 56 in social story and others in physical.

Ethnicity of child, age of child, type of story, pro or anti social settings.

Pro-social truth telling, pro-social lie telling, anti-social lie telling, anti-social truth telling

Physical stories
Children take pages out of books so there is no social issue.

Social stories
Someone either gets hurt (anti-social) or helped (pro-social).

Method
Children randomly allocated a story condition (social or physical), Seen individually and the rating chart was explained, each child listened to either all 4 social or all 4 physical stories. Counterbalancing used by changing order of stories given.

Results pt 1
No significance between order of stories and gender of child. Scale converted into quantitative data.

Pro social truth telling results
No difference in rating of pro social behaviours, Can children rated the same at all ages, Chin children rating truth telling less positively as they aged.

Pro social lie telling results
Can children rated lie telling negatively - this decreased as age increased. Chin children changed from it being negative at 7 to positive at 11

Anti-social truth telling results
No difference in culture, both rated it very positively.

Anti-social lie telling results
Negative ratings increased with age of the children.

Qualitative data
Children asked why they gave their results, Chin children in pro truth telling gave negative ratings because the character was 'begging' for praise. They also stated you shouldnt leave your name after doing a good deed and they couldnt explain why.

Conclusions
Moral development is different in different cultures as a result of socio-cultural norms and practices and not only a result of cognitive development.
