Depressive mood constantly for over 2 years, fewer depressive symptoms than unipolar

Tricyclics, SSRIs, SNRIs and MAOI's

What other treatments are there for depression?
Electroconvulsive therapy and psychological therapy (CBT)

Where is serotonin found and what is its precursor and enzyme?
Dorsal raphe, tryptophan and tryptophan hydroxylase

How to MAOI's work?
Destroys excess monoamines in the terminal buttons, inhibits activity of MAO which increases release of DA, NA, 5HT

WHat do trycyclics affect?
5HT and NA

What is the monoamine hypothesis of depression?
Insufficient acitivty of monoaminergic neurons, especially serotonin and NA

What is odd about the therapeutic action of antidepressants?
They tend to be slow (several days and weeks)

What does electroconvulsive therapy achieve?
Increases sensitivity of postsynaptic neurons to serotonin in hippocampus and increase GABA
