Learn 5.1 Production methods for a growing business

?
1. What is flow production?
Large-scale production where each stage of production is carried out one after the other, continuously on a production line
1 of 17
2. State 2 advantages of flow production...
•Lower cost per unit •Much quicker production allowing increased output
2 of 17
3. State 2 downsides of flow production...
•Expensive machinery •Difficult to change the machinery to produce a different product
3 of 17
4. What is meant by efficiency?
Producing the most output with the least amount of input
4 of 17
5. How can the efficiency of a business be measured?
Cost per unit
5 of 17
6. What is meant by division of labour?
Breaking a job down into small, repetitive tasks that can be completed by a specialised machine or worker who has become specialised (each task could also be carried out by a machine)
6 of 17
7. What is meant by specialisation?
Work divided into separate tasks or jobs that allow workers to become skilled at one of them
7 of 17
8. How can division of labour and specialisation impact on efficiency?
When the task is split down into many tasks, each task can be completed by a specialised machine or worker who has became specialised. This makes the whole process more efficient.

9. How would you make production more efficient?
You could use flow production, division of labour and specialisation

10. What is meant by lean production?
Lean production is a set of measure that aim to reduce waste during production. Waste could be workers wasting time on a production line, making too many items or making faulty products
10 of 17
11. What are lean production methods?
Methods which reduce waste such as: •just in time production •kaizen
11 of 17
12. What is just in time production (JIT)?
Ordering supplies so that they arrive just when they are needed and making goods only when ordered by customers.
12 of 17
13. State 2 advantages of JIT production...
1. Stock not held. Money not tied up in stock 2. The time between paying for supplies and receiving payment from customers is reduced, improving cash flow
13 of 17
14. State 3 disadvantages of JIT production...
1. Customers have to wait for goods to be made as completed goods are not held in stock 2. Cost of ordering supplies could increase as so many small orders are made rather than one large order 3. Requires very reliable suppliers and transport systems
14 of 17
15. What is Kaizen?
Continuous improvement
15 of 17
16. How does Kaizen improve efficiency?
The theory is that small improvements will all add up to large improvements in efficiency. If staff report small ways to improve their park of the production line, eventually large savings can be made
16 of 17
17. State 4 ways in which lean production can impact employees...
1. Staff need to be trained or the method will not work 2. Some staff will be motivated by training 3. Some staff will not be motivated by new methods of working 4. No stock held so any disruption such as staff striking can be very damaging
