What is an Irregular Marriage?
Meant marriages could take place any where provided they were conducted by an ordained clergyman, this encouraged underage,secret and bigamous marriages. Took place until middle 18th C

What did the Marriage Act of 1836 allow?
Non conformists (non CofE) and Catholics to be married in their own places of worship. It also made non religious marriages to be held at register offices.

What happened to the legal minimum age in 1929?
In response to the campaign by the 'National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship' parliament raised the age for marriage to 16

What makes a marriage legal?
The signing of the register, up until this point it is not recognised as a marriage under British law

What is a civil partnership?
A legally recognised relationship between two people of the same sex. it only exists once registered, and at this point it has the same rights and responsibilities as a marriage.

When does a Civil partnership end?
the death of one partner OR following a formal process called dissolution

What did the Civil Partnership Act 2004 do?
Give same-sex couples the same legal rights and responsibilities as married heterosexual couples. It also set out formal procedures for the dissolution of partnerships.

When was the legislation to allow same sex marriage in England and Wales passed?
July 2013, and came into force in March 2014. Northern Ireland has stated that it does not intend to introduce this legislation.

Can homosexual people get married in a church?
It depends on the church. Any religious building that isnt run by the CofE can opt in to allowing same sex marriage.
