Why does insolation vary with latitude?
Due to variations in day-length and the angle of incidence of the sun's rays.

What is the angle of incidence of the sun in the tropics? What effect does this have?
The midday sun remains high in the sky all year round. This means the sun's rays are concentrated and strong.

How does latitude affect the concentration of the sun's energy?
Outside the tropics, the angle of the sun is lower and the rays travel a greater distance through the atmosphere, losing energy. On reaching the surface each ray heats up a larger area than in the tropics so the sun's energy is less concentrated.

What is the solar constant?
The amount of solar radiation we get from the sun. This varies slightly with the sun's activity.

How does Earth's distance from the sun affect insolation?
The Earth's distance from the sun changes as it orbits. When Earth is closer to the sun it receives more solar radiation.
