Alexander died of a fever so his general Ptolemy took over and ruled.

It was the meeting point of many trade routes so attracted large-scale trading.

Safe harbours for ships, lots of dock-workers to handle cargo, huge warehouses and a busy market.

By sea, travellers would see the huge light house Pharos, which stood 135 metres tall.

Animals would take fuel to the top up a spiral ramp.

It had a grid system which meant streets met at right angles, wide streets, tall houses, buildings made of marble.

A shrine made by Cleopatra to general Marcus Antonius. It was finished by Emperor Augustus as a shrine to himself.

Two giant obelisk pillars from an ancient Egyptian temple. They stood in front of the Caesarum.

A huge library which held over half a million volumes. Scholars would study in the museum.

Euclid wrote his famous geometry textbook and Aristachus put forward his theory that the Earth orbited the Sun.
