the straightforward meaning of a word, like the one found in a dictionary

what are particlar word suggests or what is associated with it. the connotaions can be positive or negative. e.g connotations of sun is happy, bright, relaxing, summer

a comparison that uses words such as like or as e.g he had a face like thunder
