Chomsky 1965
argued that childs ability to aquire langauge is innate and inbuilt - its a natural development that occurs when children are exposed to language. - each child has a L.A.D ( language aquisition device which allows them to take in gramatical rules.

Piaget 1896 -1980
cognitive approach, focussing on the importance of mental preocesses. - chilren initially are very egocentric and cant metally process that something can exist outside of their immidiate surroundings. - But how are SEN linguistcly fluent?

Skinner 1957
suggestes that language is aquired through imitation and reinforcment - repeating what people say and being rewarded for their efforts through praise from caregivers, they do this also by correcting mistakes - important for phonological development

Berko and Brown (1960) - FIS
a child refered to his plasic fish as FIS, when parents asked if it was his 'FIS' however he said no, the parent then asked if it was his 'fish' and the child said yes... suggesting children understand a wider range of phonemes than they can produce

Berko (1958) - wug test
- children shown a strange creature called a 'wug' - shown a drawing of two creatures and told there was 2 and asked to compleate the scentence 'there are now 2...' 3-4 yr old children said there were two wugs-showing internilisation of the 's' rule
