A comparison between two things, using the words 'like' or 'as' in-between the words e.g 'my sister was as big as a house' 'he was miserable like the weather'

Personification
Giving an object/thing human qualities e.g 'the pencil decided he was not happy' 'The flame of the candle danced in the dark'

Repetition
When the same word or phrase is repeated within a piece of writing.

Figurative/Literal
When something is literal, it means exactly what it says. When something is figurative, it is an altered or exaggerated version. e.g 'i lost my mind'

Juxtaposition
when two ideas are put close together to show a clear contrast. e.g an advert showing risk of diabetes next to a MacDonalds poster.

Connotation
Associations we make with a word or phrase e.g What does the word 'slither' make you think of.

Rhyme/rhythm
Words that sound the same have a rhyme. The use of rhyming words to give a poem a beat creates rhythm.

Symbolism
When an idea or object symbolises something e.g Eggs symbolise Easter, Lambs symbolise Spring.

Tone
Tone is the emotions or atmosphere a piece of writing creates. 'He stood broken as shattered glass as she walked away and left him'

Voice/speaker
the person that is speaking within a story or poem. If it's not the character himself speaking, then this is called a THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE!
