What is Accent?
Variation in pronunciation associated with a particular geographical region.

What is Dialect?
Variation in words, structures and lexical features associated with a particular geographical region.

Define Standard English:
The dialect of English that is considered to have the most prestige and is used in the education system and in formal written texts.

Define Slang:
Reffering to words and phrases which are considered informal, that can perhaps be used more than Standard English in some social groups.

Define Taboo:
Lexical choices which can be deemed to be offensive, taboo language includes swearing or using words which are considered inapropriate and unacceptable.

What are Neologisms?
New words that are constantly entering the English language. Examples such as: "selfie" and "unlike".

Define Occupational Register.
Sometimes stemming from personal interests, an occupational register or jargon is largely based on shared understanding between certain groups or individuals.

Define Recieved Proununciation.
This accent is used in the teaching of English and is viewed as the most prestigious accent. This has led to it being viwed as the "correct" way of speaking and is often assciated with Parliament, and Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

What is a regional accent?
A regional accent can be seen as the way you pronounce certain words dependng on where you live, and where you are from.

What are idiomatic phrases?
An idiomatic phrase is a phrase that has an accepted and known meaning that is different from the dictionary definition of each individual word, for example, "at the drop of a hat" or "hit the nail on the head".

What is social mobility?
A phrase that is used to describe a person's move from one social class to another- this can change through a change in jobs, marriage, or financial situation.

Define code-switching:
Occurs when a bilingual speaker will use and alternate between different languages while talking.

What does "unmarked by person" mean?
unmarked by person mans that a subject or verb agreement has not been met.

What is multiple negation?
Multiple negation happens when a sentence or utterance contains more than one negative.

What is plural marking?
Plural marking is the method of making a singular noun into its plural form.

What is unmarked plurality?
Unmarked plurality happens when a singular form of a noun is used rather than the plural.
