A feild experiment in a high quality nursing home in the USA (Connecticut)

What did the sample consist of?
91 old people (aged 65-90, those not in this range were removed as were non-communicative/bedbound patients)

What did the Responsibility Group (RIG) consist of?
8 males and 39 females on the 4th floor

9 males and 35 females on the 2nd floor

How were the old people the same/balanced?
Balanced in terms of health, class, time at the home ect.

What did the 1st questionnaire consist of?
Rated how happy and active pps felt on a scale of 0-8.

What did the second questionnaire- that the 2 nurses (day and night) were given consist of?
It adressed the pps across 9, 10 point scales including alertness, active participation and a sense of well-being.

The research assistant

One week after the questionnaires were filled in.

The 33 year old male boss of the home

What did the announcement say to the RIG?
They were given a message emphasising their responsibility for themselves. They were allowed to make choices (eg whether thurs or fri was 'movie night' or how to complain) and giving them a responsibility of choosing & looking after a plant.

What did the announcement say to the CG?
They were given a message emphasising that the staff were responsible for their happiness. Staff made decisions (eg which night was 'movie night') and looked after their plant for them.

3 days later

'We want you to be happy. Treat this like your home and make all the decisions you used to make.'

To see if improvements were made
