What is the difference between a Landscape and a Landform?
Landscape refers to the whole area including its Landforms, waterbodies and landmarks. Landforms are individual components of the landscapes
1 of 14
How does a Wave-cut Platform form?`
Erosion by waves at the foot of a cliff creates a wave cut notch, as further erosion occurs notch gets wider and turns into cave, overlying rock becomes unstable and collapses, cycle continues leaving a wave-cut platform behind
2 of 14
What is an example of Negative feedback in terms of Wave
Wave-cut Platform formed by erosion, as it extends further, waves begin to break and loose their energy by the time they reach the cliff base reducing rate of erosion
3 of 14
What is Strata?
Layers of rock
4 of 14
What are Bedding Planes?
Horizontal, natural breaks in the Strata
5 of 14
What are Joints?
Vertical fractures caused by either by contraction as sediments dry out or by earth movements during uplift
6 of 14
How do folds form?
By pressure during tectonic activity making rocks buckle and crumple
7 of 14
How do Faults form?
When stress or pressure to which a rock is subjected to exceeds its internal strength causing it to fracture, the faults slip or move along fault lines
8 of 14
What is a Dip?
Refers to the angle the rock strata lies
9 of 14
How do Caves form?
When joints and faults are eroded by hydraulic action and abrasion
10 of 14
How are Arches Formed?
When to caves join up or a single cave is eroded through a headland
11 of 14
How does a Stack form?
When the top of an arch collapses
12 of 14
How do stumps form?
By the continual erosion of stacks, it collapses leaving an isolated pillar of rock
13 of 14
How do Headlands and Bays form?
Where there are bands of alternating hard rock and soft rock at right angles to the shore line, soft rock is eroded quickly forming bays and more resistant rock erodes slowly forming a headland that sticks out
