Where does voice come from
Voice begins with an impulse from the brain. It is stimulated by an intention to speak/sign. Two elements produce voice - a flow of air and vibration.
1 of 6
How does air travel into the body
Air is taken in through the mouther/nose and passes down the trachea (windpipe) and into the lungs. It's pulled down by the contraction of the diamphragm.
2 of 6
How do the muscles push air out of the body
As the diaphragm relaxes, the abdominal muscles work to return breath up the trachea.
3 of 6
What's the larynx
Located in the upper part of the trachea. Its primary function is to protect the air way. When using our voice, we close the vocal chords across the air flow. The out-breath causes the edges of the folds to vibrate, generating sound.
4 of 6
How long are the vocal chords
15-20mm
5 of 6
How many times do the vocal choes open and close
Depending on age; sex; health and the note pitched, they do it 60-1,000 times/sec
