Eldest daughter of Frances Brandon and Henry Grey duke of Suffolk, granddaughter of Charles Brandon and Mary Tudor (sister of Henry VIII and youngest daughter of Henry VII)

Why was the Devise planned?
1553 health of king Edward VI deteriorating; Northumberland wanted to retain power; religion

What was the original plan?
Spring 1553 left the throne to the male heirs of Lady France Grey and her daughters, whilst excluding Mary and Elizabeth

Why did the situation change?
By the end of May 1553 doctors reported that Edward’s health was declining fast and that he had, at best, two months to live. This threw the initial devise into chaos. There were no male heirs of the Grey family

How did Northumberland and Edward respond?
June 1553 that the Devise was changed to make Lady Jane the heir. Councillors and other notable people were forced to sign them

He failed to arrest Mary allowing her to reach her supporters in Kenninghall, East Anglia and rallied her cause

14th July he left London - major failure

His departure gave the Privy councillors the opportunity to declare support towards Mary

Why did Northumberland fail to gain support?
Harsh treatment of Kett's rebellion; still large Catholic population and legitimacy was the most important factor - timing meant little propaganda had gone out so people didn't know who LJG was

What happened to Northumberland?
Duke of Northumberland was executed on 22 August 1553

Lady Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley?
Imprisoned and tried 13th November; Charles V Holy Roman Emperor requested their lives be spared; however Wyatt's rebellion changed that (Jane's father Duke of Suffolk was involved) executed 12 February 1554

To convert her to Catholicism
