What is Lactose? And where is found?
Is a sugar found in the milk
1 of 13
What enzyme hydrolyses Lactose?
Lactase
2 of 13
In what stage of life does one produce a high amount of Lactase?
Young babies
3 of 13
Why does young babies need to produce a high amount of enzyme Lactase?
Because milk is the only food that young babies have
4 of 13
Why is there is a reduction in the production of Lactase in adults and production diminishes through childhood?
Because milk forms a smaller parts their diets
5 of 13
What is Lactose intolerance?
Reduction of enzyme Lactase results to producing a little or no Lactase
6 of 13
What is the problem of Lactose Intolerance?
People do not product sufficient Lactase to digest the Lactose they consume
7 of 13
What happens to undigested Lactose when it reaches the large intestines?
Microorganisms break Lactose down giving a rise to the volumne of gas
8 of 13
By which process do microorganisms probably produce the gas in the small intestine?
Respiration
9 of 13
Suggest why this gas is unlikely to be Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon Dioxide is produce from process of Aerobic respiration, conditions in the large intestine's are aerobic
10 of 13
Why is bad to have high amounts of gas in your small intestine due undigested Lactose?
It can result to cramps, diarrhoea, bloating and nausea
11 of 13
What are you deprived of when you have Lactose Intolerance?
Calcium
12 of 13
How do you resolve this?
By taking in foods rich in calcium or by adding enzyme Lactase into your milk before drinking it
