Stage 1
Orientation towards obedience to avoid punishment and belief in right of authority. Moral reasoning: Obey rules to avoid punishment. Value of human life: Based on the status or physical attributes of the person.

Orientation to behaviour that satisfies one's own needs and occasionally the needs of others. Moral reasoning: Conform to obtain rewards, have favours returned, and so on. Value of human life: Is seen in how much it satisfies a person's needs.

Orientation to behaviour that pleases others and is approved by them. Moral reasoning: Conform to avoid disapproval, dislike by others. Value of life: Based on how much others value the person.

Orientation towards authority, rules and social order. Moral reasoning: Conform to avoid the displeasure of authority figures. Value of human life: Depends on its place in society.

Orientation to behaviour that is agreed upon by the whole society and meets its standards. Moral reasoning: Conform to maintain the respect of others in society. Value of life: Depends on its contribution to community and is a universal human right.

Orientation toward behaviour that meets one's own ethical principles. Moral reasoning: Conform to avoid self-condemnation. Value of life: Due to a universal respect for each individual.
