What is collision theory?
it states that in order for a reaction to occur particles must collide in the right direction with the correct energy and that most particles do not react on contact
1 of 18
What 5 things affect rate of reaction?
surface area, concentration, pressure, temperature and catalyst
2 of 18
How does temperature increase rate of reaction?
An increase in temperature means the particles have more kinetic energy which produces more frequent successful collisons with energy >or= the activation energy
3 of 18
How does surface area increase rate of reaction?
An increase in surface area increases surface area to volume ratio which will result in more frequent successful collisions because more particles are exposed
4 of 18
How does concentartion increase rate of reaction?
an increase in concentration means more particles in a fixed volume so mfsc with energy greater than or equal to the activation energy
5 of 18
How does pressure increase of reaction?
an increase in pressure means the same number of particles in a smaller volume so mfsc with energy greater than or equal to the activation energy
6 of 18
How does a catalyst affect rate of reaction?
addition of a catalyst speeds up a reaction as it provides an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy and it is not used up in the reaction
7 of 18
Wha are the labels on a Maxwell Boltzmann distribution curve?
y axis - no of particles with energy E, x axis - energy E
8 of 18
what does the area under a maxwell boltzmann distribution represent?
number of particles
9 of 18
Where is the most probable energy on a Maxwell Boltzmann curve?
the peak of the graph
10 of 18
Where is the mean energy on the curve?
right of the most probable energy
11 of 18
Which way does the curve move if the temperature decreases?
left
12 of 18
which way does the curve move if the temperature increases?
right
13 of 18
Why does the curve always start at the origin?
no particles have no energy
14 of 18
Define activation energy
the minimum energy required by particles for a reaction to occur
15 of 18
What must all particles that react have?
energy greater than or equal to the activation energy
16 of 18
What does a catalyst do to a Maxwell Boltzmann distribution curve?
no change in the curve shape just lowers the activation energy (moves to left)
17 of 18
What does an increase in concentarion do to a Maxwell Boltsmann curve?
increases the area under the curve but keeps the most probable energy, the mean energy and the activation energy the same which means the amount of particles past the activation energy
