What were the key features of the Nazi Party in 1919?
The party railed against: communist and socialists whom they blamed for bringing down the Kaiser, the Weimar politics who had accepted the Treaty of Versailles, the weakness of all democracies and the Jews, who undermined the German economy.

25 Point Programme - included scrapping Treaty of Versailles, expanding Germany's borders and depriving Jews of German citizenship. The Party was willing to use force to achieve this. Changed their name to Nazi Party and had swastika as its emblem.

Hitler created the SA (Brownshirts). They were the parties private army and provided security at meetings and bodyguards for Nazi leaders. Rohm was in charge of the SA.

What were the causes of the Munich Putsch?
Hitler wanted to make an impact nationally and wanted to exploit the discontent the German people had. Hitler needed to act before the unrest settled. Stresemann had started to crack down on extremist groups (Hitler would be next).

What were the events of the Munich Putsch?
Hitler burst into a meeting of Bavarian officials, Hitler threatened them with a gun until they agreed to support his uprising. The next day they had changed their minds but Hitler continued.

What were the short term results of the Munich Putsch?
Hitler and other leaders of the Putsch were put on trial, found guilty of treason and sentenced to 5 years. NSDAP was banned. In the short term, the Putsch was a defeat and humiliation for Hitler.

What were the long term results of the Munich Putsch?
Hitler used the trial to gain national publicity for his views. The NSDAP ban was weakly and lifted in 1925 - NSDAP won seats in Reichstag. Hitler was released after 9 months. Wrote Mein Kampf. Came up with new approach to gain power in Germany.

How did Hitler improve the organisation and finance of the NSDAP?
Hitler befriended wealthy businessmen who shared the hatred of communism and wanted Hitler to limit the power of trade unions. This extra income enabled the party to become more organised - divided the party into four sections.
