A German daily magazine, Der Spiegel, published an article criticising the readiness of the West German Defence Force, the Defence minister lied about it but more importantly Der Spiegel's offices were raided and journalists arrested

The abuse of power was reminiscient of an authoritarian dictatorship, Adenauer was forced to defend his Defence Minister and so appeared to be trying to limit the freedoms of the press
