Substance misuse
continued abuse of a recreational drug despite negative consequences on the individual and their family and friends

synapse/synaptic gap
the gap between two neurons which information can travel across

Tolerance
the body adapts to the drug and requires more of it to achieve the same effects as a smaller dosage would have given you before. e.g. down regulation (number of receptors reduces)

Physical dependence
individual's becomes reliant on the drug and if drug is stopped abruptly, withdrawal symptoms will occur

Psychological dependence
individual becomes mentally reliant on the drug and without the drug they experience emotional withdrawal in that they think they cannot be happy without it, for example

Withdrawal
What occurs when an individual stops taking a drug that they have developed a physical dependence to in that withdrawal symptoms occur

Health psychology
looks at the diagnosis, cause and treatment of illness, specifically substance misuse. uses biological approach to see the effect of the drug on the body and mind and social, cognitive and learning approaches to understand WHY people misuse substance
