Martin Luther nails his 95 Theses against the door of Wittenburg cathedral in protest at the Catholic doctrine of indulgences

The Diet of Worms. Luther appears before Charles V to answer charges of hersey. Won't recant. Declared a heretic and is excommunicated by Pope Leo X. Frederick III takes him to Wartburg castle for his safety.
